The circumstances of transition of the society of deficit into the society of welfare have been a subject of intense sociological studies. The society of material abundance creates specific life conditions, increasingly focused on non-material values and subjective experience. In this relation, we talk about the concept of the society of experience, where the main drive of many human activities lies in the search for experience and increasingly more intense need for experiencing the own physical. The society of experience advocates a pleasure-seeking lifestyle; experience thus becomes a target of immediate satisfaction. Preferring instant gratification has to do with an explosion of offers related to all types of entertainment and experience as well as with the onset of an information era which has introduced an unprecedentedly fast-running time into the human life.

The paper offers a summary of main findings of the quantitative research on the media literacy level of Slovak seniors. We have conducted our research within a broader set of research activities of IMEC – International Media Education Centre founded thanks to initiative by Faculty of Mass Media Communication, University of SS. Cyril and Methodius in Trnava. The research was focused on mapping the media competencies of Slovak senior population. The main goal was to find out the level of media literacy of our seniors. To what extent are they able to use computers and the Internet? Are the ways they use media active and balanced or not? Do they understand media content and its functions? What is their knowledge about media regulation? We also paid attention to the issue of seniors using media for public participation as well as to their skills related to creating media contents. Our findings suggest that Slovak seniors reach the basic level of media literacy in all three considered categories: user competencies, critical thinking and communication skills. Therefore, we are able to confirm that the seniors are aware of the basic media functions and they know how to use media for education purposes, relax or entertainment.

The authors submit the paper with the aim of introducing the benchmarking practicable in the university conditions. The paper pays special attention to theoretical definitions of benchmarking and it focuses on problems and weaknesses of marketing communication strategies applied by Slovak universities. Therefore, the main goal of the paper is to determine the most significant criteria of benchmarking comparison in the field of marketing communication implemented by selected Slovak universities. As a research result, the authors present and discuss an improvement proposal model. After carrying out a benchmark comparison applied to marketing communication at selected universities in Slovakia, they provide us with findings of the study about the use of marketing communication. Relying on the benchmarking results, they suggest recommendations for the improvement in exploitation of marketing communication in the field of higher education in the Slovak territory.

The right to make corrections and the right to reply – in some countries are these rights protected by their constitutions as the fundamental rights. These rights in Slovakia in case of the print media are guaranteed by the Press Law. The adoption of the law protecting the right to make corrections and the right to reply against the print media was strongly objected by the mass media as well as by the parliamentary political parties belonging to the opposition. The public discussion on the draft of the Press Law was managed in a misleading manner. No attention was paid to many issues of real relevance. Hence, the National Council (the Slovak parliament) approved the law which does not cover the legal status of foreign publishers and press agencies. The enforcement of right to make corrections and the right to reply is poor, if the obliged person ignores the entitled person with his/her requirement for publishing of the correction or the reply. A series of other issues identified within this paper are waiting for a binding interpretation by the competent governmental authorities in the phase of application of the Press Law. It is up to the judiciary within its case-law on right to make corrections and the right to reply.

The paper deals with the contemporary development trends in American mainstream movie production. Basic assumption of this text is examining mainstream movie production as one of the most commercially successful segments of the media industry, together with the business of culture and entertainment. The author reflects broader economic, historical and organizational aspects of Hollywood production aimed at the mainstream audiences, as well as the socio-cultural significance of the meanings perceived by movie-goers. Therefore, the paper examines the mainstream Hollywood production in all complexity, from the viewpoint of production and creative mechanisms, but also in the context of social meanings associated with given category of film works referring to favoured motives and thematization of everyday reality in contemporary globalized society. The author defines current mainstream movie production as part of media culture influenced by entertaining visuals, intertextuality, genre hybridization, tendencies to use seriality and parody.
